Adorned 101: Your First Glueless Install
Nov 6, 2026 · @ashley davis
Your first wig install can feel like a big moment. Maybe you've watched a dozen tutorials and still aren't sure where to start. Maybe you're worried it won't look natural, or that it'll slip the second you step outside. Let's put all of that to rest. A glueless install is the easiest, most forgiving way to start wearing wigs, and with a little practice it'll take you minutes, not hours.
Here's everything you need to know for your first one.
What makes a wig "glueless"?
A glueless wig is built to fit your head. Instead of relying on adhesive to hold it down, it's constructed to your head measurements so it sits snug and secure on its own. No glue, no tape, no harsh removers on your skin or edges.
A few details make a glueless unit look like it's growing right from your scalp:
Fit. When the cap matches your measurements, the wig stays put without pulling or sliding. Most units also have adjustable straps and/or an elastic band at the back for extra security.
Tinted lace. Our wigs can come with lace tint, if selected, to match your skin complexion. Tinted lace blends into your skin so the hairline reads as your own.
A little gel for the grid. Lace is a fine mesh, and up close you can sometimes see its tiny grid pattern. A small amount of a lace gel like Bold Hold Lace Jelly, smoothed over the lace, presses it closer to your skin and helps hide that grid. This is not glue: it's light hold that washes off easily.
What you'll need
Your glueless unit
Rat-tail comb, hair gel or edge control, and hair ties for your foundation
Wig cap (optional, more on that below)
Lace gel, such as Bold Hold Lace Jelly (optional)
Small, sharp scissors, if your lace needs trimming
Detangling brush or wide-tooth comb
Mirror and good lighting
Silk or satin scarf or bonnet for nighttime
Step 1: Measure first (if you haven't already)
A glueless wig is only as good as its fit, so this step happens before your wig ever arrives. Measure around your head (circumference), front hairline to nape, and ear to ear over the top. If you ordered a made-to-order unit, we build to these numbers. If a wig ever feels too tight (headaches, pressure) or too loose (shifting when you turn your head), the measurements are the first thing to check.
Step 2: Create a flat foundation
The flatter your natural hair, the more natural your wig will look. Lumps and bumps under the cap show through.
Braids: Cornrow your hair straight back into flat foundation braids, and tuck or pin the ends down.
Sleek ponytails: Depending on the length and thickness of your natural hair, you may be able to skip braids and do two sleek, low ponytails, then wrap and pin them flat.
Wig cap (optional): A cap isn't required, but it can help. I sometimes wear one because I have locs, and it helps smooth my foundation. If you use one, choose a shade close to your scalp.
Tip: Keep your foundation moisturized but not greasy. Heavy oils can make a wig slip.
Step 3: Place your unit
Hold the wig by the sides and bring the front edge to your forehead first, then pull it back over your head.
Position the lace so it sits in a natural spot on your forehead, about ½ inch in front of your natural hairline. This covers your own hairline completely and gives the lace room to blend.
Check that the ear tabs sit evenly in front of each ear and the part is centered where you want it.
Tighten the adjustable straps, if needed, at the back until the wig feels secure but comfortable. Snug, never squeezing.
Tip: Shake your head gently and look down. If it shifts, tighten the straps a little more.
Step 4: Trim and blend the lace (if needed)
If your lace hasn't been pre-cut, trim the excess along the hairline in small snips, following its natural shape. Cut a little at a time; you can always take off more, but you can't put it back. Leave a tiny bit of lace in front of the hair rather than cutting right at the roots, so the hairs don't shed.
Then smooth a light layer of lace gel over the lace if you want that extra melt. Press it down with your fingers or tie a scarf over the hairline for a few minutes to help it lay flat.
Step 5: Frame your face
Now make it yours. Use a detangling brush or wide-tooth comb to refine the hair and frame it to your face. Shape the part, sweep the front, and let the layers fall where they flatter you most. Baby hairs are completely optional: a soft, subtle look is just as polished.
Step 6: Get up and go
That's it. You're Adorned. No drying time, no waiting for glue to set. Just get up and go.
Questions first-timers always ask
Will it fall off? Not when it fits properly. Your measurements, the adjustable straps and (on many units) an elastic band do the work. Windy day? It's secure.
Will people be able to tell? With tinted lace, correct placement and a face-framing finish, most people won't. The most common giveaways are lace sitting too far forward or back, a bumpy foundation and lace that's too light for your skin, all of which you've just learned to avoid.
How long can I keep it on? One of the best things about glueless is that you can take it off whenever you want: nightly, or every few days. Give your scalp and natural hair a breather, and cleanse and moisturize your scalp regularly.
Can I sleep in it? You can, but you'll extend its life if you take it off at night. If you do sleep in it, wrap it in a silk or satin scarf or bonnet to reduce friction and tangles.
Will it damage my natural hair? A glueless install is one of the gentlest options because there's no adhesive near your edges. Don't braid your foundation too tight, and don't over-tighten the straps.
How do I take it off? Loosen the straps, gently lift the lace from the front (if you used gel, a little water or a damp cloth releases it), and slide the wig back off. Store it on a wig stand or in its packaging so it keeps its shape.
How do I care for it? Detangle gently from ends to roots, wash with sulfate-free products when it starts to feel heavy or coated, and let it air dry on a stand. Use a heat protectant before any hot tools.
